Gerry MacKay

Gerry MacKay was born in Kenton, Manitoba on February 19, 1930. MacKay played with the Brandon Greys of the Mandak league from 1949-51, signed with the Chicago Cubs in 1952, and played in ’52 and ’53 with Sioux Falls of Class C in the Northern League. He later played Class B with El Paso, Texas in 1955, and smashed in three home runs in 1956 with the AA Birmingham Barons in the season opener. Playing with the Brandon Cloverleafs, MacKay won Manitoba Senior Baseball League titles in 1966 and ’67. Following his impressive playing career, MacKay took on coaching and administration. He became the head coach of Canada’s first national team at the Pan-Am Games, led team Canada at the World Championships in Cuba in 1971, in the Pan-Am Games at Cali, Columbia in 1971, and at the World Championships in Nicaragua in 1972. MacKay was a director of the Canadian Federation of Amateur Baseball (CFAB) from 1967-74, host chairman of the Canadian senior tournament at Brandon in 1970, and was the Manitoba Baseball Association president from 1972-73.
