Derek Shamray

Derek Shamray was born in Oak River, Manitoba on November 12, 1969. During his minor baseball career, Shamray participated in numerous provincial championships at a variety of different levels. By 1986, he was playing with the Hamiota Red Sox in the Manitoba Senior Baseball League. This team found major success, and was previously inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame. Shamray also played for the Oak River Dodgers in the same league. By the 2000s, he began coaching minor ball, and he brought mulitple teams to the provincial championships. Shamray also coached three teams at Western Canada Baseball Championships. Later in his career, he coached senior teams that went to nationals. Even after his induction into the Hall of Fame, Shamray continued to advocate for the improvement and maintenance of baseball facilities within the province. His efforts led to the creation of new dugouts and an electronic scoreboard. Shamray’s contributions to baseball have positively impacted Oak River, Blanshard, and Hamiota regions over the past 40 years.
