Ron Hewett was born in Oak Bluff, Manitoba on November 15, 1932. Hewett was an excellent player and coach. During his playing days, he was a very good catcher, outfielder, and batter. He had a strong arm, good speed, and hit at a solid .350 average. Hewett played on many teams over his career, some of which include the Charleswood Juveniles (1951), the Norwood Juniors (1952), Fort Whyte (1953), the Elmwood Juniors (1954), the Canadian Ukrainian Athletics Club Blues (1957), the St. Boniface Native Sons (1958), Precious Blood (1959), Port Arthur Red Sox (1962-65), and the South End Sioux (1967-68). Among those, he won a championship with the St. Boniface Native Sons, he was MVP and Batting Champion with the Elmwood Juniors, a Senior League all-star in 1955, and Lakehead Senior League MVP in 1964. Hewett also managed the Fort Whyte tournament team from 1954-61. He was an outstanding leader, and was instrumental in the building of the Oak Bluff Recreation Centre with an arena and four baseball diamonds. Along with his tireless efforts in baseball, Hewett also coached hockey and ran his family’s farm.
