Robert Kinley was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on October 2, 1956. Kinley was perhaps best known for his “all out hustle, anything to win” attitude. He was an excellent player in all aspects of the game. Kinley was selected to eight consecutive all-star teams from 1974-81 with the River East juniors, Legion 141 seniors, and the Elmwood Giants seniors. Playing shortstop and outfield, he helped the River East Raiders win both a juvenile and a provincial championship. He was the 1975 Junior League Batting Champion, and he played first base on the 1978 Eastman all-star team that won the western Canadian championship. Kinley helped organize the Elmwood Giants seniors in 1979, and then played and coached with the team until 1996. During this time, the Giants appeared in 11 finals, won one provincial championship, and represented the province in western Canadian championships four times, winning two silver medals. Kinley was also on the 1979 and ’80 Redboine All Stars who won two silver medals at nationals. Kinley has previously been inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame as a coach with the 1978-80 Elmwood Juniors.
