Bill Kinley was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on December 17, 1957. Kinley was one of the most feared hitters of his era. He consistently found himself at or near the top of many offensive categories within the leagues he played in. In 1977, he led Team Manitoba to a silver medal at the Canada Summer Games by hitting four home runs in the tournament. In 1978, he was the top hitter for the Elmwood Giants junior team who won the Western Canadian Junior Championship. He was known for his “monster” home runs, but Kinley could also play good defense as a shortstop or third baseman. For instance, he played the entire 1978 season without making a single error. Kinley went on to lead the Redboine Senior Baseball League in home runs in 1980 and in batting average and runs batted in (RBI) in 1981. He later played four years at Mayville State where he was won all-conference honours twice.
