Nelson Woods

Nelson Woods was born in Hamiota, Manitoba on July 29, 1927. Woods was a good outfielder in the 1940s and ’50s, and he played on the district junior team that won the Manitoba-Saskatchewan tournament in 1948 at Fort Qu’Appelle. Woods went on to coach both juvenile and midget teams to western Canada titles in the mid-1960s. He also umpired for 12 years in the Manitoba Senior Baseball League, and was in the Canadian National Senior Championships in 1970. Woods was a prominent hockey player and curler as well, winning silver at the Canadian Senior Curling Championships in 1980. He served as mayor of Hamiota from 1960-73, and he was reeve of the RM of Hamiota from 1989-92.
