Mel McGorman was born in Eden, Manitoba on August 10, 1920. McGorman was an excellent pitcher on Eden’s teams in the 1940s and ’50s. McGorman was always the workhorse of his team, and would often pitch two or three games a day. Tragically, McGorman lost the thumb of his pitching hand in a farm accident, but that did not stop him from pitching. In fact, it may have made him better. He continued to pitch, and teammates and peers were adamant that he then threw an even better curveball than before. His skill was shown in the multiple championships his team won continued to win.
