Gus Merlevede

Gus Merlevede was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba on June 30, 1924. Merlevede was one of the greatest catchers Manitoba has produced. At the age of 12, he started playing playing baseball with Provencher High School, and later played with Lord Roberts, River Heights, the West End Maroons, the St. Boniface Native Sons, St Claude, and St. Anne. In 1944, Merlevede joined the Canadian army and played with the West Coast Service League. This team toured service camps in Washington and Oregon, playing against Major League class AAA and AA players, providing entertainment for US soldiers and their families. Merlevede also played with the Superior Blues, where he broke his ankle (1946), the Reo Rods (1947-50), Transcona (1950), St. Boniface (1951), and Fannystelle (1952-54).
