Frank McKinnon was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on June 16, 1934. McKinnon was a dynamic second baseman for the Brandon Cloverleafs from 1950-56 and for the Hamiota Red Sox from 1957-63. He was a great team leader, and he helped the Cloverleafs win their first tournament in 1950 in Ninette, Manitoba. The Cloverleafs further dominated Westman baseball in 1956, with 54 wins, 4 losses, and 2 ties. McKinnon went on to go barnstorming with Hamiota in 1957, and win two Manitoba Senior Baseball League (MSBL) championships with them in 1961 and ’62. From 1957-62, McKinnon and his team won the Birtle tournament six times. Following his days as a player, McKinnon began coaching and administration of baseball. He was supervisor of Brandon Minor Ball in 1955, and co-coach for the Hamiota juvenile and junior teams in 1958, during which both teams won the Manitoba crown. In 1967, McKinnon was on the Carman Pan-Am baseball committee, from 1978-90 he was a Carman Minor Baseball executive, and he was coach, manager, and umpire during this time as well. In 1990 he was the manager of the Carman Goldeyes Bison team, who were Manitoba champions and fourth in the Canadian championships at Abbottsford, British Columbia. McKinnon was also very prominent in hockey as a player, coach, and administrator. He is a life member of Hockey Manitoba and Hockey Canada.
