Eddie Cass

Eddie Cass was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 12, 1893. Cass served in WWI on a United States artillery squad and then headed back to Winnipeg to become a lawyer after the war. Cass, known to many as Mr. Baseball, started the Catholic Club baseball team, which became the Columbus Club. In 1922, this team became senior league champions. Cass also coached the Dokey Tigers in 1931 and ’32, leading his team to the provincial championship title for both years, before the league folded. Cass was well known for his humility and humanitarianism. He contributed generously to community organizations such as the Misericordia Hospital, St. Paul’s College, and Children’s Aid Society. Eddie has also been inducted into Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.
