Don Maskiw was born in Birtle, Manitoba on May 6, 1949. Maskiw was a top level pitcher for nearly 30 years. He began his baseball career with Birtle, but spent most of his later years playing for teams from St. Boniface. While with the St. Boniface Native Sons, the team won the Eastern Manitoba Senior Baseball League pennant in 1978, and the Redboine Senior Baseball League pennant in 1979, ’90, ’91, ’93, and ’94. Maskiw pitched in five Canadian national championship events, and was an all-star many times in the the Manitoba Junior League, the Eastern Manitoba Senior League (1978), and the Redboine Senior League (1979, ’80, ’82). Maskiw was named Pitcher of the Year in the Redboine Senior Baseball League in 1982 and 1994. His best year, however, was in 1978 when his record was 14-2. His second best year was in 1993 when he went 10-3. Maskiw pitched his most memorable inning in 1968, when he walked the bases full, and then struck out the next three hitters after coming back from 3-0 on all of them.
