Cornelius (Curly) Haas

Cornelius Haas was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on November 21, 1909. Haas started his career with the Columbus Club in the mid 1920s before moving to Portland, Oregon in 1939. He later returned to Winnipeg to coach the Columbus Club with Eddie Cass in 1946 and to establish the Elmwood Giants. In 1947 Haas was named the manager of the ’47 all-star North Division Junior baseball team, and in 1948 he was the Elmwood Giants manager when they won the Manitoba Junior Baseball League (MJBL) championship. That year, he was a first all-star coach in the MJBL. Haas was very active within the Giants’ organization at all levels, and in 1954 he became the co-owner of the Winnipeg Giants in the Mandak League. Haas also worked on organizing committees for the 1967 Pan-Am Games, became the Manitoba Baseball Association Commissioner in 1968, and was the General Manager of Canada’s team at the 1970 World Championships in Cali, Columbia. Hass won the Manitoba Sports Federation Builder award in 1971. Cornelius Haas was lovingly referred to as “Curly” by many who knew him.
