Carey Candy was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on November 22, 1959. Candy was a pitching ace for the Elmwood Giants from 1977-2000. Throughout his baseball career, Candy also played for the Teulon Cardinals, Kildonan Mudcats, Kindersley, and even a brief stint in Australia. For decades after his advancement to Senior League baseball, Candy still held the Manitoba Junior League record for career strikeouts, at 441, as well as for strikeouts in a single season, at 118. In one playoff season with Elmwood, Candy pitched 48 out of 56 innings, and once pitched over 16 innings in one day, leading Elmwood to a Senior Championship victory over Brandon in 1994. Candy was not only a pitcher, however, and once hit six home runs in the Western Canadian Senior Championship of 1989.
