Stuart Gilman was born in Los Angeles, California on August 23, 1961. Gilman moved to Winnipeg when he was 15, and started playing baseball with the Charleswood Midgets. He then played junior baseball with the South End Chiefs, and senior ball with South End, Elmwood, and Teulon in the Redboine League. During his junior career, he was a league all-star and contributor to two junior provincial championship teams. In 1981, he was recruited to play for Team Manitoba at the Canada Summer Games in Thunder Bay. From 1980-84, Gilman played at Mayville State University in North Dakota, where he received All-Conference and All-District Honours twice. He was previously inducted into the Mayville State Hall of Fame. During his senior career, Gilman was a member of Teulon’s Western Canadian Championship team in 1990, and he also participated in the 1991 National Championship. The next year, he moved to Calgary, where he would continue playing senior baseball for another 12 years. Over the course of the 1990s, Gilman would participate in three Baseball Senior Men’s World Series. Later in life, Gilman coached his sons in the Calgary minor baseball system.
