John Lesyshen was born in Dauphin, Manitoba on June 12, 1942. Lesyshen was a speedy center fielder with the Dauphin junior and senior Redbirds from 1957-68. In the Manitoba Senior Baseball League (MSBL) with Dauphin, he was an inaugural MSBL champion in 1961. Lesyshen was a consistent .300 hitter with a strong throwing arm, and as the Redbirds MVP, he was an unanimous 1968 all-star with a .338 batting average. Lesyshen was also an excellent hockey player, and he played with the Edmonton Oil Kings who were national junior finalists twice. He received a four-year scholarship with North Dakota Fighting Sioux, and then spent one year coaching in Switzerland before spending the next three decades in Waterloo, Iowa as an educator.
