Joe Pethybridge was born in Carman, Manitoba on November 21, 1919. Pethybridge was a third baseman in Winnipeg during his younger days. When World War II hit, he instead put his baseball career on hold to join the army. He served almost six years, including four overseas, and was a D-Day veteran. Following the war, Pethybridge returned to Carman and coached minor baseball. In 1963, he was the manager for the Western Canadian Pee Wee Championships, and again in 1965 for the Manitoba Midget Championships. Pethybridge went on to manage the Carman Goldeyes, with Fred Walker as the coach. In 1967 he was involved in the Carman Committee for the Pan-Am Games. In 1969, with a 25-3-2 record, the Goldeyes advanced to Junior Nationals. In 1981, Pethybridge was selected as Carman’s Citizen of the Year for his many contributions to the community, and in 1983 he received the Goldeyes Alumni Award. He was also elected to the Manitoba Baseball Association Honour Society. Pethybridge is fondly remembered as Carman’s Mr. Baseball.
