Ian Lowe was born in Bradwardine, Manitoba on October 24, 1917. Lowe first began playing baseball with his brothers, before getting into tournament baseball as a pitcher with Virden, Minnedosa, and Bradwardine. Lowe also played for the Moosomin Badgers, the Neilburg All-Stars, the Saskatoon Maroons, and the Brandon Greys. He won the batting title in the semi-pro British Columbia league in 1943 with a .443 batting average, and in 1951, when he was managing baseball teams, “The Sporting News” stated that Lowe was one of the best Canadian-born playing managers in baseball. Lowe was elected to the Manitoba Baseball Association’s Honour Society in 1994.
