Elmer Sanderson was born in Carman, Manitoba on March 12, 1907. Sanderson was an outstanding pitcher for area teams during tournament games. On the weekend, he would travel to North Dakota to play in tournaments, as in the 1930s playing ball on Sunday in Manitoba was against the law. Sanderson played for many teams, including Myrtle, Miami, Oakville, Notre Dame, Elm Creek, Belmont, and Carman. He later went on to become a highly regarded coach and umpire.
