Doug Hamm was born in Morden, Manitoba on March 8, 1963. Hamm began his baseball career in the 1973 Little League Canadian Western championships. He was a member of the 1980 Carman Goldeyes junior team, and a member of the 1982 Provincial all-star team. Hamm appeared in the Canadian championships in 1981 and ’82 as part of a provincial all-star team. He had a 20 year career with the Morden Mohawks, in which he was Border League Rookie of the Year his first season and Border League Batting Champion in 1982, ’87, ’88, and ’89. He was also Border League MVP three times, a Border League all-star 15 times, and Border League champion while part of the Morden Mohawks 13 times. Hamm was also a very good pitcher, striking out more than 1000 batters during his time on the mound. He was presented with an Outstanding Achievement award at the 1993 Western Canadian championships, and selected as Baseball Manitoba’s Intermediate Player of the Year in 1993.
