Cam Walker

Cam Walker was born in Souris, Manitoba on November 4, 1960. Walker was an excellent pitcher. He was with the 1973 Manitoba Beaver finalists (2 hitter, 11 strikeouts), the 1975 Manitoba bantam champions (12 strikeouts), and a western Canada silver medalists team. Walker started playing with the Souris Cards in the Manitoba Senior Baseball League at the age of 14 , and in 1979 he was selected for the national junior program. Walker enrolled at the Indian Hills Community College in Centerville, Iowa, where they defeated the Montreal Expos (Class A) minor league team. In 1981, Walker moved to Western Kentucky University, where he had a 7-1 record with a team-leading 60 strikeouts. In 1982, Walker was Western Kentucky’s co-captain with an 8-3 record. During this time, he played summer baseball at Barrhead AB, where he was the league all-star in 1981 and 1982. Walker was added to the Team Canada roster for the Intercontinental Cup, and pitched the opening game against Panama, winning 7-2 with 8 strikeouts. After graduation from Western Kentucky, Walker received a $40,000 signing bonus from the Milwaukee Brewers. He also received offers from the Blue Jays, Yankees, Braves, Giants, and Angles. From 1983-88 he played “High A” ball at Stockton in the California League. Walker later played AA at Al Paso in the Texas League, and one year of winter ball in Mexica. In 1989, Walker returned to Alma Mater as pitching coach, and in 1992 he became the head coach of the Indian Hills Falcons, which is a position he held at the time of his induction into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame. Walker led his club to the Junior College World Series in 1993, ’95, ’97, and ’98, and he was named Region XI Coach of the Year and ABCA Louisville Slugger Coach of the Year each time he did so.
