Bob Wilson was born in Brandon, Manitoba on September 30, 1939. Wilson played in the Brandon Little League, the Pony League, and with the Brandon Athletics. He went on to play with the Brandon Cloverleafs. Over the following 21 years, Wilson won the Central Manitoba Baseball Association title four times (1957-60), the Manitoba Senior Baseball League title six time, and the Manitoba Senior A Crown five times. He played in the Canadian Championships at Kenosee in 1971, took silver at the Nationals in Edmunston, NB in 1973, and he was named to nine first all-star teams and three second all-star teams. Wilson had a 17-year batting average of .306 in the MSBL, and he was named to the MSBL 40th Anniversary All-Star Team as an outfielder.
