Bill Whitehead was born in Roland, Manitoba on November 8, 1954. Whitehead played minor baseball with Roland in the mid 1960s. From 1970-75, he played with the Carman Goldeyes junior team as a center fielder, winning several Provincial Junior Championships. Following this, he played with the Carman Goldeyes’ senior team from 1976-89. Whitehead had many nicknames, including “Billy White Shoes” or “Whitey”, and he was known for his gracefulness on the field, making all plays look easy. Throughout his baseball career, he was almost always an all-star at center field. Whitehead was consistently among the league leaders in batting average and home runs in the Redboine Senior Baseball League. He was voted Team MVP of the Carman Goldeyes numerous times, and he went on to play against touring national teams from Japan, Korea, and Canada’s national team. Whitehead also played on the Manitoba Intermediate Border League championship team that won gold at the Westerns in Alberta.
