Bill Nicholson was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on September 16, 1920. Nicholson started working for the Canadian National Railway and playing with the Railroaders in 1938. He enlisted in the Navy in 1941, and played baseball and hockey when the ship came in for repairs. After the war, Nicholson went on to pitch for the Transcona Railroaders, and led them to a Winnipeg Senior Baseball championship in 1946. He then joined the Reo Rods in 1947, and pitched them to a Victoria day crown at Osborne Stadium before 5,000 fans. Nicholson led the Rods to a Red River Valley League title soon after, and he was then referred to as Reo’s ace pitcher, and cream of the Canadian city’s baseball talent. He was also excellent at hockey and golf.
