Al Johnson was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on March 30, 1935. Johnson was a talented left-handed pitcher, first baseman, and outfielder. He was consistently an all-star player and he was a valued member of the St. Boniface Native Sons and Fort Whyte teams. He also performed excellently with the Winnipeg Maroons junior team who played out of Osborne Stadium. Many described Johnson as a classy first baseman, good hitter, and fierce competitor with a gentlemanly attitude.
