A baseball team was first formed in Kinosota in the 1930s, and by the ’60s this team became known as the Kinosota Cougars. The caliber of this team and the support from their community peaked during this time. The players were all extremely committed, their families were enthusiastic, and their fans sacrificed much of their time to travel to and watch Kinosota’s games. The Cougars played in leagues with teams from Portage la Prairie, Arden, MacGregor, Austin, and other nearby towns. They also entered into more distant tournaments, including in Kenora, Ontario. For two seasons they joined a local league for fastball and played in exhibition games and tournaments. They would play almost every weekend, and once played 28 games in just one month. A huge highlight for the team was being able to play in front of Queen Elizabeth in Portage in 1970. The team has since disbanded, but a large cougar on a rock at the entrance of the village informs all visitors that it is the “Home of the Cougars”.
