Bill Carpenter was born in Athens, Pennsylvania on December 6, 1937. He was a diverse athlete who played baseball, basketball, football, and track. At just 17 years old, Carpenter was signed as a pitcher with the Baltimore Orioles and was later picked up by the St. Louis Cardinals before heading to Winnipeg to play for the Winnipeg Goldeyes in 1959. He completed that year with a successful season, leading his team to a 19-4 record and leading the league with a 1.59 earned run average. In 1962 Carpenter became the Goldeyes’ pitching coach. From 1963-1976 he played with the Souris Cardinals as pitcher and first baseman, and in 1970 he won the Manitoba Senior Baseball League’s Triple Crown with a .385 batting average, five home runs, and 25 runs batted in in 65 times at bat. Carpenter was also inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.
