Jack was born in Falkirk, Scotland. He was a quiet, stern, and had a great sense of humour, was a strict disciplinarian and charismatic umpire with a “Stoneface”. Jack umpired in Halifax while in the Navy during World War II and later in 1946 he coached the Halifax Shipyards. Jack became umpire-in-chief of Winnipeg Senior League in 1947, and officiated in the Man Dak League.
